Yeah, okay, so it broke again. Photographer, IT guy, and San Francisco native Tim Dempsey urges you not to look at the Monorail as a piece of outdated junk. He writes:
You take something like the Monorail or the cable cars in SF and you have probably some of the costliest transportation per linear foot to maintain in the country. On the other hand, there is nothing that quite captures the imagination like these tourist traps. Every time you step onto either, you are stepping onto a time capsule. You can see that each worn out, thrice-mended part on these beasts is likely salvaged, or custom fabricated in some forgotten, city-run, machine shop located at the end of an alley in lower Queen Anne, or pushed into the corner of a dilapidated warehouse at the end of some rotten pier. And each one of these shops is probably keeping seven old codgers, one Bunn coffee maker, and a semi-retarded broom pusher in business. So preserving these things, is like giving the finger to the Man, saying some things are worth saving, no matter what the cost. It’s true there’s something touching about the Monorail’s dilapidated vision of the future. But I’m not sure how many more fire truck rescues the Man is going to pay for.
