U.S soccer fans were decked out in American flag attire yesterday afternoon and gathered at the notorious British soccer spot, George and Dragon Pub, in hopes to see a crushing against Portugal. “I believe that we will win!” was contiuously chanted in the courtyard. Spirits dropped a little when Nani put away a goal for Portugal in the first five minutes of the game, but standing shoulder-to-shoulder, the drunken crowd still remained to shout words of encourgament and wave their flags as if they were at the stadium. In the second half of the match I traded the British pub for The Dubliner down the street, where I was able to share a table with a few equally excited fans and get a clear view of the screen. The U.S goal in the 64th-minute brought the crowd back to their feet and by the time Clint Dempsey put the U.S ahead 2-1 in the 81st-minute everyone jumped to high-five their table neighbors and cheer. All photos by Anna Erickson
With less than a minute left in overtime, people prematurely began to make comments about how happy they were, smiling with victory in their sights. Seconds later those smiles dropped in devastation, with hands over mouths, and the crowd silent as they watched a perfect cross by Cristiano Ronaldo lead to Silvestre Varela’s diving header that ended the match at an even 2-2.
