This weeks cover story “The High Road” looks at Initiative 502, on the state ballot this fall, which would effectively end pot prohibition in Washington and instead making it a regulated, taxable industry. If I-502 were passed, one of the unintended consequences would be a legal limit of THC in the blood while driving, so we looked deeper into The Science Behind Stoned Driving to see how marijuana impairs the body while driving and what is really detectable in the bloodstream. Plenty of you shared your take on the toke story, including commenter Rachael who frames the problem as complicated and the (extreme) solution as simple in our Comment of the Day:This is the biggest deal surrounding marijuana legalization. There is no doubt that some users are impaired beyond what is safe to drive. However the standardized testing is not as standard for DUI as alcohol because active THC is metabolized differently by different people. Medical patients should automatically be exempt! Those patients should also be responsible and use other forms of transportation (public, walking, bus). I think every one should smoke and no one should drive vehicles.
