There may be more glamorous spots in Seattle for Vietnamese food, but my favorite is Huong Binh. Located in a restaurant-filled strip mall in the Little Saigon section of Seattle’s International District, it offers a wide variety of noodle soups, rice plates, rice-flour crepes, and more at reasonable prices. Weekend specials include bun măng vit, the duck-broth soup with rice noodles and bamboo, along with an overflowing plate of poached duck, that you’ll see on nearly every table. Prepackaged food spills out onto sidewalk tables, where you’ll find dumplings, fresh corn, marinating eggs, and mysterious Vietnamese confections—including neon-colored, mochi-like products that might have you dizzily seeing rainbows. You can get banh bot loc to go, but it’s better to eat these shrimp- and pork-filled tapioca dumplings right in the restaurant, dipped in Huong Binh’s sweet, spicy, pungent nuoc cham dipping sauce that’s savory and addictive. Also note that if you’re looking for fantastic pho, some of the best in Seattle can be found in the same strip mall at Pho So 1, where the beef broth is aromatic and delicious.
