The next time Luke Sommer breathes free air, he’s going to be a lot older than he is here. As expected, former Army Ranger Luke Sommer had an additional 20 years tacked onto his already lengthy prison sentence this morning for a failed murder-for-hire plot against a federal prosecutor.Back in 2008, a federal judge found the British Columbia native guilty of masterminding a coordinated robbery of a Tacoma Bank of America. Two years earlier, Sommer and company, armed with AK-47s, raided the bank and made off with $50,000. But Sommer’s dream of using the money to start his own crime family was not to be. The group was soon caught, and Sommer sentenced to 24 years in prison. Three years later, he tried to shank one of his co-defendants. Having not yet reached rock-bottom, he then offered an undercover FBI task force member $20,000 to kill the federal prosecutor trying his case.In January, Sommer plead guilty to the knife attack and the attempt to hire a hitman. According to court documents, he’s requested to serve out the remainder of his sentence in Canada, a move that’s sure to alienate whatever military buddies he had left.
