The city’s failed effort to sell its public privies on eBay has prompted one man to try to prove there’s still demand for them among the homeless. He’s calling it the “No Shit” campaign—actually KNO SSHTT (Keep the Nasty Orifice, Save Seattle’s High Tech Toilets). The city plans to auction the toilets online again this week. As of press time, they remained unsold.
“Everyone has an opinion about this, that the money was misspent,” says Caleb Poirier, who currently lives in SHARE’s Tent City 3. “But removing them will make more money misspent.”
The city’s already spent $5 million to install and operate the urban porta-potties; it will cost $570,000 to terminate its lease contract with German firm Hering Bau, and another $250,000 to remove them. Still, the council voted yes to ridding the city of these giant silver boxes in May. But it’s not too late.
“Removal of these toilets won’t cause reduction in crime,” argues Poirier. “It will just move it somewhere else.”
