That would be the state of the U.S. Postal Service. No one’s discussing it all. And yet, you tell me if there’s a problem: I was preparing to go away for two weeks’ vacation so I went to the agency’s Web site (usps.com, baby!) and found this extremely handy feature that allows you to tell them what date to stop your mail and when to resume it. No more silly postcards. Man, they’ve really got it together. They even gave me the option of having them just deliver the accumulated mail rather than my having to go wait in line to pick it up. Hey, I’m a busy guy, who wouldn’t choose that? So, I return from my vacation, my mail resumes, and it consists of…the same handful of bills and junk mail I typically get. No big delivery. No sign of anything. As I say, I’m a busy guy, so after a few weeks I make it to my neighborhood post office on Lower Queen Anne to inquire about the missing mail. Oh, this isn’t your post office, they tell me. Yours is located over on 15th Ave. Well actually, they say, there isn’t really a customer window, but you just around the back and ask. Hmm, ok. They also gave me a phone number.I called, and (to give them their due) a real human being answered. He said he would check on the status of my mail and get back to me that afternoon. I heard nothing. So I called the next day, and the guy told me that yes, he had checked into the status of my mail, and because I hadn’t come pick it up within a week, the carrier had just sent it all back. (This is the same carrier who was already coming to my apartment building every day.) But what about the super-handy Web site and the box I checked? He couldn’t really explain that but he offered to write me an “excuse note” to any of my correspondents (or bill collectors) in a way that led me to think this was by no means the first time he’s had to make such an offer.I’ve never been one to bad-mouth the postal service. And private companies like UPS can be a huge pain. But I couldn’t help thinking, there’s no way a privatized business, a real dot-com, would be quite this absurd. So my question to you, candidates, is what are you going to do about it? This voting bloc of one is waiting.
