Staff Photo: Rainier Beach High SchoolRobert SmithIs it just us, or does it oddly make sense that the skills required to educate the young and impressionable on the dangers of drugs and drug abuse are easily translatable to actual drug dealing.Sure, that’s some perhaps twisted logic. But we now have an example in the form of Robert Henry Smith.Robert Smith, Rainier Beach High School’s drug and alcohol prevention counselor, was indicted by the U.S. attorney today for conspiracy to distribute Oxycodone. As previously reported, Oxycodone has become quite popular in King County, a fact not gone unnoticed by Smith, apparently.According to court documents, authorities began investigating Smith after they were approached by a confidential informant who claimed that Smith and alleged co-conspirator Adrian Demetrius Johnson were pushing Oxycontin and Percoset (both derivatives of Oxycodone). A joint task force of Seattle police and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration later witnessed Smith take part in four drug buys, one of which took place while he was still on the clock, and just two blocks away from Rainier Beach High. Smith did not draw any of his students into the alleged conspiracy, nor did he sell to them, say prosecutors. But school authorities have still seen fit to put him on paid leave. Both he and Johnson will remain in federal custody pending a detention hearing to be held next week. If found guilty, they could both receive up to 20 years in prison.
