On the heals of last night’s first televised mayoral debate, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn today released his first general election television ad of the season.
Somewhat predictably, a warmly-lit McGinn touts Seattle’s accomplishments under his administration, saying: “When I took office four years ago, times were hard. But we never let our values slide. While Olympia made deep cuts to education and human services, in Seattle we pushed for what we believed in. We doubled the Families and Education Levy, passed Paid Sick Leave and began divesting from fossil fuels.”
The Olympia reference was certainly no accident, considering the bulk of McGinn’s campaign – in addition to trumpeting his own progressive record – has been spent trying to discredit the record of his challenger, state. Sen. Ed Murray.
McGinn closes out the new ad by saying: “When our grandchildren ask us what we did on climate change, inequality and education, I want to say to them, ‘We did everything possible.’ That’s why I ran for office four years ago, and that’s why I’d like your vote.”
McGinn campaign spokesperson John Wyble tells Seattle Weekly’s Ellis Conklin that the commercial is scheduled to run on cable, and was part of a $40,000 ad buy. Earlier this week the McGinn campaign released on online only ad featuring the mayor’s 16-year-old daughter, Miyo. You can see that ad here.
