Now that Seattle’s public toilets have gone unsold on eBay, one man is mounting an effort to show the city there’s still demand for them among the homeless. He’s calling it the No Shit campaign– actually KNO SSHTT (Keep the Nasty Orifice. Save Seattle’s High Tech Toilets). “Everyone has an opinion about this, that the money was misspent,” says Caleb Poirier, who currently lives in SHARE’s Tent City 3. “But removing them will make more money misspent.”Poirier’s got a point. The city’s already spent $5 million to install and operate the urban porta-potties and it will cost $570,000 to terminate its lease contract with German firm Hering Bau, and another $250,000 to remove them. Still, the council voted yes to ridding the city of these giant silver boxes in May. But it’s not too late. “Removal of these toilets won’t cause reduction in crime,” argues Poirier. “It will just move it somewhere else.”Look for Poirier– and his catchy acronym– to pop up around town in the coming weeks.
