No need to storm the Capitol, yet. The House Finance Committee managed to pass the Flexcar bill– which would keep car sharing exempt from rental taxes– just in time for the cutoff yesterday. Seattle city council members had been actively lobbying the legislation, but the bill’s survival was no doubt helped by an online petition of Flexcar users that’s more than 1850 signatures strong. Rest not car share faithful! The bill still has to pass the House floor and will have a tougher road ahead in the Senate where Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen (D-Camano Island) has already refused to hear a similar proposal in her committee. The House also late yesterday approved, 64-33, the sales tax credit Seattle needs to afford annexing White Center. The House passed a similar proposal last year only to see it die in the Senate at the hands of Sen. Margarita Prentice (D-Renton). Word is Sen. Prentice may be more amenable to the idea this time around, but Seattle will still have to contend with a waning short session and a lot of bills fighting for attention.
