Need further proof that we’re in the midst of a new “vegetable revolution,” as Gwen Elliot delves into in this week’s awesome cover story?
Try this on for size: Portland has a vegan strip club.
Yes, it’s a revelation sweeping the country today, delivered via Buzzfeed in a story that’s ostensibly about New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker flirting with a stripper on Twitter.
Given the fact Booker is single, and the “flirting” is extremely low-level, I think the real story here is obvious: there’s a vegan strip club in Portland.
Now, this isn’t exactly “breaking” news (despite the click-baity headline announcing this post). Portland’s Casa Diablo bills itself as the “first ever vegan strip club,” and plenty of folks have already taken notice. Good Day Oregon has sent in a camera crew. IFC has dispatched Kumail. Plenty of others have followed suit.
But the fact remains, today is likely the day that mainstream America learned that the city with the highest number of strip clubs per capita – The Rose City – even has one for vegans.
Or, at the very least, it’s the day Corey Booker’s handlers learned about it.
Booker campaign spokesperson Griffis issued the following statement to Buzzfeed:
“I think it’s pretty well known that the mayor talks with people from all walks of life on Twitter. There have been a couple of stories about that over the years. Really, the most shocking part of this story was learning there is a vegan strip club in Portland.”
That about sums it up.
