In Olympia for a medical-marijuana rally on the Capitol campus, I wasn’t about to leave town without scoping out one of Oly’s access points. A quick scan of unvisited shops yielded the irresistible name Green Acres 420; of course, that’s the one I went to.
Budtenders/receptionists Dan and Spencer went into action when my friend and fellow patient Doc O’Zee and I walked in; a few minutes of shuffling paperwork and we were in the bud room checking out flowers. Everything is $10 a gram—always a welcome donation scheme, and even more so since Green Acres’ flower selection is quite impressive.
While $10-a-gram pricing elicits damn few complaints among patients, one quibble I’ve heard is that uniform donation schemes don’t clue patients in to which are the “best” strains. Of course, a little research—a little eyeballing and smelling the flowers—can go a long way in that regard.
But if you do need additional input, there’s a way to figure out which strains Green Acres thinks are best: Check out their ounce prices. Certain strains, such as the indicas Confidential Cheese and Afghan Kush and the hybrids Jack Frost and Girl Scout Cookies, go for $280 an ounce, while most go for $240; a couple of strains, Hawaiian Big Bud and Jilly Bean, are $225.
I selected the prettiest sativa in the place, soft, pillowy flowers of Apollo 13 ($240 an ounce); and the comeliest indica, Afghan Kush Special ($280). (You should know that Green Acres offers two Afghan Kushes, and “Special” is the one you want—the other is $40 an ounce cheaper, but you want to go ahead and spend the extra money.)
Apollo 13 is my favorite strain I’ve tried all week. Its spacey sativa rush reveals just how appropriately it’s named. It’s so spacey, in fact, that if you take more than a few tokes, you’re probably going to be indulging in hours of driftily unfocused, medicated rumination instead of whatever else you were planning to do. But that’s OK, because while you’re doing that, you aren’t in pain or experiencing any nausea or anxiety. Heads up: If you have good headphones, take them for a spin with some Apollo 13.
Afghan Kush is gorgeously fuzzy, thickly encrusted with sticky trichomes, light-green calyxes, and abundant red hairs. The indica flowers are hard and dense, and smoke better in a pipe, bong, or vaporizer than in joint form. Afghan is a good nighttime strain, effectively ameliorating pain, insomnia, and anxiety with a deeply centered relaxation.
