If you’re a geek, this was arguably “your year.” 2013 was packed full of new shows, new movies, new games, new comics! The list goes on, it seems, into infinity. And although there were many amazingly geeky moments, a few stick out in my mind. I present the most memorable geeky moments from 2013:

SIFF’s release party for Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing was a clear standout. His Shakespeare adaptation is lighthearted, funny, and surprisingly modern, making it accessible to the non-Shakespeareans in the audience. And being a Whedon film, it’s packed with geek-friendly actors, including Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Amy Acker, and Sean Maher (bonus: They attended the SIFF opening!). If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and rent it.

Game of Thrones’ ninth episode depicted “The Red Wedding,” arguably the biggest wedding of 2013! And the bloodiest. I don’t watch the series, but I read the books, and, for all my friends who hadn’t read the books but are addicted to the show, this is the moment I have been waiting for . . . mwhahaha! When I read it, I threw the book across the room. And yet I wanted to share the pain with the TV audience. You could hear the gasps and sobs across the country during the airing of that episode, a day that surely will live in television infamy. (I’m fairly certain G.R.R. Martin lives off the tears of his viewers and readers, so that day probably added 100 years to his life, which he’ll need to finish the series.)

J.K. Rowling announced that she is creating a new movie series based on the Harry Potter universe. The movies will be based on the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (a textbook used by Hogwatrs students) by fictional author Newt Scamander. Like most Potter fans, I am ecstatic. But it gets better: Rowling will write the screenplay herself, ensuring the Potterverse is protected and accurately depicted.

Batkid saved San Francisco . . . I mean Gotham! If you didn’t see it, this was the most heartwarming geeky story of 2013. Tough kid and comic-book fan Miles Scott is in remission from leukemia, and thanks to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, he was able to live out his dream of being Batman. The foundation arranged for San Francisco to be turned into Gotham for the day, complete with crime and crowds. Thousands of people turned up to support him, holding signs declaring “We love Batkid!” After fighting cancer, it turns out, villains are no match for him.

Marvel unveiled the new Ms. Marvel, a 16-year-old girl named Kamala Khan. Oh, did you happen to note that she is Muslim and Pakistani?! Comic fans everywhere reveled at the creation of a diverse main character. And the series is going to be written by none other than Seattle’s own G. Willow Wilson. Keep an eye out for the comic, which hits stands in February.

Console Wars! Gamers everywhere rejoiced as new consoles were finally released. It had been too long: XBox 360 was released in 2005, PlayStation 3 in 2006. But which new console to pick? PS4? XBox One? Both!? Or perhaps you’re holding out for Valve to release their Steam Box, which the company announced this year. Whatever you choose, this was a good year for gamers.

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen won the Internet. The two actors, soon to appear in another X-Men installment, have been releasing photos of their friendship via Twitter and other social-media outlets all year long. If you haven’t seen these, please go Google it now. You won’t be disappointed.
