As the New York Times reports, Jeff Bezos has purchased the Washington Post and its small chain of newspapers and websites.
In an interview with his new minions, Bezos admitted he hasn’t thought the whole thing through:
“I don’t want to imply that I have a worked-out plan,” he told the Post. “This will be uncharted terrain, and it will require experimentation.”
“There would be change with or without new ownership,” he said. “But the key thing I hope people will take away from this is that the values of The Post do not need changing. The duty of the paper is to the readers, not the owners.”
Bezos was just a few months too late to call himself a local newspaper publisher. Earlier this year, The Washington Post Company sold the Herald in Everett to Sound Publishing, which also owns Seattle Weekly. In that way, shortly after a D.C. owner exited the Puget Sound market in a small way, a Puget Sound owner entered the D.C. market in a big way.
This is the second major newspaper sale in the last week, following closely behind Red Sox owner John Henry’s purchase of the Boston Globe.
