As far as painfully ironic pictures go, this one’s a doozyIt took them two attempts, but the King County Prosecutor’s office has secured a guilty verdict in the case against Naveed Haq.

Haq’s first prosecution resulted in a mistrial. This time around, lawyers for the self-proclaimed “soldier of Islam” had him plead insanity. The jury, as is their wont, apparently decided to avoid what would have been a purely academic discussion on the existence of evil, and balked. Three years ago, Haq, who is of Pakistani descent, walked into the office of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and began blasting away. In total, he shot six Federation employees, railing against Jews and American support of the state of Israel as he went. One, Pamela Waechter, later died. For her death, Haq was found guilty of aggravated first degree murder. On that charged alone, the thirty-four-year old will spend the rest of his life in actual prison, not a state mental institution as his lawyers had hoped. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily preclude the presiding judge from issuing a more harsh penalty at sentencing. More as it comes.
