As a militarized police squad and outraged citizens remain embroiled in Ferguson, MO, thousand of miles away in Seattle people gathered to silently protest. Standing in solidarity with Mike Brown, the 18-year-old unarmed black man shot and killed by police as he held his hands up in surrender, as well as the Missouri community that has rallied to demand justice, Seattelites joined together at 4th and Pine for 60 minutes of complete silence organized by Mothers for Police Accountability. As the time approached, MFPA’s representative at the vigil, Harriet Walden, explained that this vigil was meant to broach the broader subject of police brutality and accountability. She was joined by Rick Williams, the brother of John T. Williams whom had been shot by police in 2010.

The scene in Westlake Center was one of calm reflection with pained, frustrated and heartbroken faces littering the crowd. Police hung back on the other side of the courtyard and no interference was made. Below are captured moments during the hour of silence. See the rest of the photos here.
