An estimated 700,000 human beings (more than the population of the city: 634,535) descended on Seattle today to scream in joyous victory at the return of the Super Bowl Champions, the Seattle Seahawks. Children craned their necks and cawed like birds, their mothers picking them up by the scruff of their hoods when they tumbled into the streets. Scaffolding became VIP seating for construction crews, and billboards turned into bleachers for adventurous fans. Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson’s giant, blown-up paper heads bobbed in unison at CenturyLink field. Effigies of dead horses were dragged through the street on bikes and remote control cars.
Marshawn Lynch, with a massive cigar shoved in his thermal facemask, stood atop a Ride the Ducks vehicle and threw Skittles at the crowd, later grasping for a bottle of Fireball from a fan who wanted to return the favor. Upwards of 10 women and a couple of men asked Wilson to marry them.
It was a good day to be a Seattleite.
