Alesha Lair’s possible spiritual avatar.Alesha Lair seems like she might be the impatient type. Because anyone who allegedly cons a developmentally disabled man out of his life savings is angling for a spot on the express lane to hell. Five years ago, the 23-year-old Lair befriended a 55-year-old mentally challenged man at the apartment complex where they both lived. As noted by investigators, Lair already had a boyfriend. What she needed, apparently, was an easy mark.As indicated by court documents, in Douglas Lare she found one. He lived alone. For 23 years he had held down a job as a supply clerk at a local hospital. But investigators found that various life-long developmental disorders had left Lare with the cognitive function of an adolescent. According to court documents, Lair professed her love for the man, promising that their future together included marriage and children, but only if he helped her build a line of credit in case anything should happen to him. Soon the two began dating officially. Thus began his financial ruin.Police now accuse Lair and her extended family of using Douglas Lare like a veritable ATM. According to court documents, $59,000 was drained from Douglas’ retirement fund to help pay for, among other extravagances, $15,000 in credit card charges. After obtaining a copy of his 2008 credit report, investigators found that after the two began dating, 12 new credit accounts had been opened up in Lare’s name. He later told investigators that he didn’t remember filling out the credit applications, and had little recollection of making that many purchases. According to police, Alesha Laire filled out the applications for him. And because he trusted her, he signed “whatever Lair handed to him,” say the charging papers. In 2007, Lair’s mother and her mother’s boyfriend both moved into Douglas’ apartment, say police. Court documents indicate that sometime afterward he paid for a 2006 Hyundai Sonata for Lair’s exclusive use. Police now say Lair used her boyfriend’s name to enter into a contract with T-Mobile for cell phones for herself and two other family members. All this while writing to her actual boyfriend who was serving time at the Washington Correctional Center, say police. When her boyfriend, Timothy Dye, was sprung, Lair moved out. Realizing that he had been taken for a ride, Lair’s victim fell into a depression and was later hospitalized for making suicidal threats. Lair has now been charged with first degree theft and is currently being held in King County jail on a $50,000 bond.
