According the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the otter suspected of viciously attacking a boy and his grandma in the Pilchuck River last month has been killed. Like just about every other media outlet, we covered the attack when it happened.

As Donna Gordon Blankinship of the Associated Press reports today:

Capt. Alan Myers of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said Monday that federal officials shot the male otter the Pilchuck River near the place where the attack took place at the end of July, about 30 miles northeast of Seattle.

Myers says officials are nearly certain they got the right otter because of its unusually aggressive behavior. Otters are more likely to avoid people than to attack them.

The AP goes on to note that otter was “at least 4 feet long,” and a necropsy will be conducted to find out if the angry animal was suffering from a disease or injury that “may have contributed to his aggressive behavior.”
