Yesterday’s lightning was fun to ooh and ahh at from afar, but for the state’s already stressed out firefighters, it was anything but fun.

Lightning strikes caused 17 new fires in Washington yesterday, burning 1,370 acres of land, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. While 15 of those have been contained, the remaining two continue to burn out of control to the Southwest and Northwest of Olympia.

Meanwhile, President Obama signed a disaster declaration yesterday, allowing Okanagan county and the Colville tribes access to federal disaster relief funds to fight the wildfires that have been consuming Eastern Washington since July 9. More areas in the state may become eligible after FEMA finishes damage surverys.
