With all the great music happening around the city this weekend, I unfortunately overlooked a show I’ve actually been waiting a long time to see. One of my favorite female singer/songwriter’s in the entire galaxy, Brooklyn’s Samara Lubelski, is performing tonight at Gallery 1412. I’ve been a fan of Lubelski’s wispy, ethereal late-night mystique and gentle, shimmery folk-pop arrangements from the moment I heard the first notes off The Fleeting Skies, her 2004 solo debut on the stellar Social Registry label. In fact, I own everything she has done since then, including the 2005 follow-up Spectacular of Passages, and the Eclipse Records LP release of her more experimental, free-form compositions In the Valley. Her third release for Social Registry, the forthcoming Parallel Suns, is currently in my stereo and I’m excited to see these songs come to life. Her magical voice and the calming nature of her music is reflected by hypnotizing string arrangements, acoustic guitar, drums and various other instruments. I’m utterly spellbound by it. Although tonight’s show will likely be more sparse than what’s heard on her records (her only back-up will be provided by Jah Division/ Soldiers of Fortune member Barry London), it should be no less beautiful. Listen to this and fall in love.
