With a new album, over 240 songs to rehearse, and in some cases relearn the intricate arrangements, in preparation of a 21 night/21 album marathon in London, Sparks has already won the title of hardest working band in 2008. On Friday, the veteran pop maestros will wrap up their epic, nearly month-long run with the world premiere of their latest pop masterpiece, Exotic Creatures of the Deep. Coming from someone who has listened to the album everyday since I got my hands on a copy a couple weeks ago, the stage is where the album really belongs and I’m sad I’ll miss that monumental occasion. Exotic Creatures of the Deep could be a Broadway smash. Who wouldn’t want to see the monkey drive or watch some pitiful fool croon “I’ve never been high!”? It’s almost too perfect. Sparks have always been very candid about their own twisted sense of humor, as well as the humor in love and loss, and their stockpile of ridiculous antics is nowhere near of running short, nearly thirty-five years after singer Russell Mael sang “I think I’m falling in love with myself again” on their breakthrough third album, Kimono My House. Tonight, Sparks will play Hello Young Lovers, the 2006 release that saw the brothers Mael dicking around, and lusting after naturally smelly girls. If only London was a ferry boat ride away. *Sigh*
