Who: The SpitsWhere: EMP Sky ChurchWhen: 9:15 p.m., MondayThe Spits put on one of the very best punk rock shows you’re likely to experience, in Seattle or elsewhere, and that is why Bumbershoot is just not the place to see this or any other like-minded band. Bumbershoot’s prohibitions on moshing or crowd-surfing in the Sky Church dictate that no true punk show can take place within its walls. Therefore, the Spits’ unadvertised set at the Funhouse was the predictably superior of the band’s two performances this weekend. At the Funhouse, the band played for about an hour. In that time, cymbals were set aflame, the main participants in a healthy, good-natured mosh pit only stopped jumping when the band stopped playing and everyone in the damn place was shitheeled on the Funhouse’s ridiculously potent drinks (which are approximately three times larger and stronger than the average libation). The Sky Church set, on the other hand, ended after six songs and twenty minutes. The few kids who tried to mosh got kicked out, and I doubt that sat well with the Spits, though I have no idea if the short set was a direct result of the ousting. It is always worthwhile to see the Spits play. But I’d rather see them in a place where everyone is free to dance, surf crowds and light objects on fire with impunity.
