Who: Loch LomondWhere: NW Court StageWhen: 6:15 p.m.My Loch Lomond experience was accompanied by a light rain and a crepe, which seemed appropriate for such a pleasant, polite set. Clarinet, violin and marimba showed up in the first few songs, and vocalist Ritchie Young’s impressive range of soft lows and surprising falsettos showed up in more than a few. Though they started their set with a thin crowd, Portland’s Loch Lomond sit right in the crosshairs of indie pop’s sweetest swoons right now: they are very, very often compared to The Decemberists (who played Saturday) for their strolling folk narratives, but I felt like tonight’s hour had more of the pop vibes of last night’s Ra Ra Riot. Loch Lomond stood out in their own right, though, in the two songs they saved for last: an unreleased tune (once aptly labeled by the band as “Epic Song,” now actually titled “The Earth Has Moved Again”) that moves from a steady war drum beat to soft bard-like strums in an arresting emotional overhaul, and “Spine” (from Night Bats), the only really upbeat mover-shaker they bust out all night. If they can keep moving in this more adventurous direction–and, man, was “The Earth Has Moved Again” grand–then it shouldn’t be hard to get plenty of folks to move right with them.
