What: Audioslave’s “Cohise”Performed By: The CBS OrchestraWhen: Last weekWhere: Ed Sullivan Theater, during a taping of the Late Show with David LettermanNotes: It wasn’t Shaffer that I was particularly impressed with on this number, it was the trumpet/fugelhorn player Alan Chez, who played the lead part better than Chris Cornell ever has. How refreshing would it be if Cornell didn’t show up to his Oct. 3 gig at the Paramount, and Shaffer was there with his crew instead? Y’all would be avoiding this. The best part about attending a taping of the Late Show is actually getting to hear Shaffer’s amazing band play more than 30-second clips. Aside from the music played during the show, the band comes out a few minutes early and runs through a few tracks for the studio audience. Every time I hear that band I’m convinced that they’re the best damn band in the country. I love hearing them effortlessly swing through Mamas & the Papas and Korn with the same intensity and proficiency.
