Valient Thorr’s denim, beards and metal will be in town tonightValient Thorr’s crazy science-fiction mythology includes time travel, Walt Disney and oh yeah, they’re from Venus. They’re definitely a band you shouldn’t take seriously, that is until you hear their music. The group’s backstory loosely goes like this: The band was traveling through time and space in order to find a way to save the people of Venus from extinction and landed on Earth. Once they got here Walt Disney stole their time machine and now they are stuck on our planet trying to save Earthlings from the same mysterious fate that doomed the inhabitants of Venus. Like I said, you shouldn’t take Valient Thorr seriously. But trust me, the band’s power metal is a force to be reckoned with on any planet. Valient Thorr look like a group of gruff Hell’s Angels rejects and they play like a band of heavy metal vikings with chips on their shoulders. The band’s latest album, Stranger, was produced by Jack Endino and its one of the best of the group’s nine-year career which should make their set at El Corazon a night of face-melting madness. The North Carolina Venusian group is part of a four-band bill that includes plenty of Northwest flair. Portland’s Red Fang will take the stage before Valient Thorr and if there is any regional band that could give them a run for their money in the power-metal department it’s definitely these guys. Red Fang recently signed to Relapse Records and will be releasing a new album next year. If you can’t wait for next year to hear new music from the band, the group will be selling a brand new EP at tonight’s show that features covers of The Wipers’ “Over the Edge,” No Talent’s “Through,” and “Carjack Fairy” by Cherubs. The EP also includes a new Red Fang song called “Pawn Everything.” And speaking of producers, the new Red Fang album was produced by Chris Funk of the Decemberists. Also on the bill are a pair of hometown bands. Curse of the North, a trio that includes former Black Houses members Christiaan Morris and Patrick Taylor and former 3 Inches of Blood/Kane Hodder bassist Nick Cates is slated to open. Witchbrun, a group that features Hell’s Belles vocalist Jamie Nova, will follow. All of this metalicious goodness will only set you back $12. Doors are at 7 p.m.
