There’s this intriguing local band called The Coyotes that has been playing around town quite frequently as of late, and I just discovered that you can pick up a copy of their record, The Earth Was Opening Over Me, over at HTML Times, where you can read a little bit about the band (or go to the download link directly to make your life easier). On some tracks, scruffy free jazz sax (pretty sure that’s what it is, anyhow) tangos with psychedelic guitar riffs. These are the numbers I like best. Other tracks sound more like straightforward folk songs accented with classical guitar picking, a little piano, and a more subdued horn section. If I understand the HTML Times’ somewhat confusing write-up correctly, I think the album is based on the work of a bunch of East German poets. However you slice it, it’s definitely an ambitious piece of work, and therefore somewhat rough around the edges, but listen to “Eyebrows, No Eyebrows,” “The Pagoda 710,” “Foot Steps,” and “An Old Home,” and I think you’ll agree: this is definitely a band to keep an eye on. They’re playing a show this Wednesday at the Jewelbox, too, so if you like what you hear, be sure and stop by.
