The result of this Project Song installment is “Mercury,” a track that sounds very Death Cab, but not nearly as affected or tortured as the process would suggest. Walla and Robbins were shown a variety of pictures and words and asked to pick just one of each to be the basis for their song. Surprising, they passed on the “epic” picture of a cat in favor of a less interesting picture of a house, a canyon, and a dog. Their word: cerebral. I know, this sounds torturous, but “Mercury” is surprisingly listenable. NPR has a couple videos that document the whole process.
