The countdown to Sasquatch! 2015 officially kicked off last night with a Launch Party at The Neptune last night.
New York-based comedian Chris Gethard—who some may know from his comedy show or his role in the TV series Broad City—was the emcee for the night. A lot of 20-somethings were in the crowd at the start of the 8 p.m. event, but filled up later with people of varying ages, including preteens, and those in their 30s and 40s.
Gethard, who will perform at this year’s festival, asked Sasquatch! veterans of the crowd what he should look forward to, eliciting responses of the sunset, the top of the hill, and the honey buckets, the latter becoming a running joke as the funnyman didn’t realize that honey buckets are another term for the porta potties.
He told a few jokes and stories, and without trying to sound like a parental figure, reminded the crowd to stay safe and hydrated, and to avoid a particular friend named “Molly.”
Then he introduced the opening act of the night, pop-punk band The Young Evils, almost uniformly dressed in edgy black shirts and tight jeans. Lead vocalist Mackenzie Mercer headbanged her brown hair as she belted out songs from the album False Starts.
After that set, the first Sasquatch video of the night was revealed. It was a trailer for the fest, with a low voice narrating the quote about “If you’re going to try, go all the way…” paired with slow-mo clips of people dancing and bands playing; an all-around uplifting video to get people excited for the festival, which it did.
Before introducing Tacocat, Gethard passed out gag gifts to the crowd, including an oat bar and tea, as a joke to prove how people love getting free stuff, even if it’s junk.
When Tacocat took to the stage, the venue was at its most crowded. As soon as lead singer Emily Nokes started to shake her tambourine—and hips—during their first song about a cat, the crowd started to dance along.
During the first chords of “Bridge to Hawaii,” when Nokes started to sing, “You are a crazy little bard of a crazy land,” Tacocat became the first and only music act of the night to start mosh pits. The dancing and hip shaking continued through the song, “Psychedelic Quinceanera.”
Unfortunately, the band had some sound issues with its guitar amp, which began to make crunching noises. But if they were breaking a sweat, they didn’t show it, and instead joked about it and told stories while trying to fix it—stories including about watching the film Juno twice back when The Neptune was still a theater, then buying the vinyl for the film’s soundtrack.
The distortion was unavoidable during the band’s anti-catcalling song “Hey Girl,” when the lead guitarist was forced to stop playing half-way through. But the crowd cheered them on, and supported the band by clapping to the beat, while Nokes continued the song’s refrain: “Construction worker (hey girl)/Dudes playing soccer (hey girl)/Bike polo (hey girl)/Drunk hobo (hey girl)/Business dad (hey girl)/Undergrad (hey girl).” The group closed out with “Crimson Wave,” which featured an energetic dancing crab.
Finally, the most anticipated of the evening of the night was the lineup reveal video. Biggest acts were Modest Mouse, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, Of Monsters and Men, Tame Impala, The Decemberists, and Spoon. (Check out the full lineup below.)
The evening ended with a mellow solo set by Ty Segall, outfitted simply with an acoustic guitar. He played old songs from his album Manipulator, and a new untitled one. The crowd started to dissipate after the lineup announcement, but those who stayed were clearly Segall fans, including Shana Cleveland of La Luz who was spotted amongst the audience.
The event was a nice preview to what fest-goers have to look forward to in May, so without further ado, here’s the 2015 Sasquatch! Lineup:
