The Cave Singers played The Showbox at the Market on Saturday, March 6 with Feral Children and the Dutchess and the Duke. The Cave Singers’ experimental tour of the state was officially a blockbluster: after packing bars and clubs in Tacoma, Bremerton and Olympia, the band sold out the Showbox on Saturday night to a massively enthusiastic crowd. They had every reason to be hyped, too – the Cave Singers put on one foot-stomping riot of a show. Marty Lund played the hell out of the washboard, Peter Quirk is one of the most winsome front men out there, and Derek Fudesco nearly stole the show for me – the deftness and intricacy of his guitar work blew me away. It was only a shame that the live shows don’t reflect any of the beautiful vocal harmonies that so enrich both Cave Singers records. Still, my favorite song of the night – “Seeds of Night,” off 2007’s Invitation Songs – was perfectly engaging and intimate. In fact, I would have liked to see this show at a smaller venue, like the Tractor – but that, of course, wouldn’t nearly fit all of the fans.
