Tennis will play the Crocodile on Wednesday, November 17.I hate this weather. I hate waiting for the bus in the rain and cold. I hate the gray sky. I hate walking my dog in the rain, and when we get home he’s wet and smelly. I hate shivering. I guess I could get some new rain boots, suck it up, and buckle down for the months ahead, but instead I’m living in denial about it, completely wistful about summer, however short it was this year. That’s why I’m glad I recently discovered the unbelievably sunny and carefree Tennis, the married and musical couple Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore. Tennis has been generating some buzz on the blogs, so you might have already heard this story. But if you haven’t — last year, Riley and Moore bought a 30-foot sailboat named the Cape Dory after six years of scrimping and saving. The pair – who are from Denver — had no sailing experience, but equipped with a copy of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, they spent eight months journeying up the Eastern Seaboard, from the Bahamas to Baltimore. Upon their return, they wrote a love-and-maritime-themed record about it. Tennis – Cape Dory (Underwater Peoples Records) from RichsLaw on Vimeo. The Marathon EP features sweet songs inspired by Wall of Sound girl groups like the Shirelles, with fuzzed-out layers of simple keys and guitar and Moore’s lively, sophisticated vocals. Come January, Tennis will release their first full-length, Cape Dory, containing even more delightfully radiant songs with titles like “South Carolina,” “Bimini Bay,” and “Seafarer.” The above title track is one of my favorites — you can hear more of their songs on their MySpace page (“Marathon” is also wonderful), and this morning Pitchfork also premiered a brand-new Cape Dory song called “Take Me Somewhere.” Tennis will be headlining the Crocodile next week on Wednesday, the 17th — total bliss.
