Taking the stage in a stocking cap and hoodie while nursing a PBR, Matt Costa warmed up for his opening gig for G. Love Wednesday night by playing to a crowd of about 100 people, sandwiched between rows of CDs and vinyl at Queen Anne’s Easy Street Records. The surprisingly tall Costa, whose set was rained out at Sasquatch!, has the acoustic campfire vibe that permeates the roster at Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. Yet his breathy, slight ’60s Brit-pop influence crossed with his pretty melodies sets him apart from the frat-boy staples. During his 50-minute set, Costa bantered with the audience, took requests and talked about drinking with David Bazan. He’s still stumping his Brushfire debut, 2005’s “Songs We Sing,” from which he pulled a number of cuts for his acoustic set, like “Sunshine” and “Sweet Rose.” Costa also weaved a couple new tunes into the mix, including “Secret Eyes.”Click here for a slideshow from his set.
