Sub Pop’s Chad VanGaalen is a wistful Canadian man who splits his time between making morphing, psyched out animations, building giant papier-mache monster heads on his roof, and writing songs about vengeful spirits who want to kill you.

Today, VanGaalen is merging all of those into one fun-filled night at Saint John’s, where he will be hosting an acoustic concert and art show for free to celebrate today’s release of Shrink Dust, his fifth LP.

Shrink Dust is partially a foray into “country” music for VanGaalen, a man who has made a name on lo-fi bedroom pop, but it’s also partially the soundtrack to an upcoming full length animated sci-fi feature film he’s been working on. Expect lots of incredible drawings of aliens, monsters, and stuff like this hanging on the walls, and don’t be surprised if there’s poop in a hot dog bun, because VanGaalen’s done that too.

In the meantime, check out the new track from Shrink Dust, a whimsical song about turning into a terrifying beast, appropriately named “Monster.”

Chad VanGaalen’s free art show/concert is tonight at Saint John’s on Capitol Hill, 719 E. Pike St. at 7 p.m. A special acoustic performance will begin at 9 p.m. All Ages are welcome.
