SHEBEAR will be performing Dec. 16 at El CorazonA lot went into writing your favorite song, but how much do you really know about it? This week vocalist Jeff Andersen and keyboardist Evan Bedlion of the newly minted ambient indie-pop band SHEBEAR (formerly Weekend Wars) sat down to talk about the first single from their upcoming untitled EP, the band’s lyrical tribute to MGMT and buying a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Song: “Drive”Album: Our upcoming EP which is currently untitled. We are hoping for a January or February release. Release Date: Dec. 9, 2012. We were actually planning on waiting and releasing the song on the EP, but the opportunity for this interview gave us the push to release it early. When it was written: Late July, early August. Where it was written
Evan: Like most of our songs, in my garage. It was during a period where we wrote about four songs in a week. It is quite a magical place. It’s like a musical oasis where creativity flows like crazy.Favorite line in the song
Jeff: “We are passing through the dark making hope for the light.” There’s just a lot of time I spend personally moving through a world that honestly is broken and dark. There’s a lot of hope in this world but a lot of the time it’s hard to find, you just gotta know where to look. Which part was the hardest to come up with
Jeff: To be honest, for me, it was all pretty easy. We kind of write all of our songs pretty fast. We’ve never spent more than a couple of jams on them. Once we start it all kind of just flows into place. Evan: The trouble was not coming up with parts but deciding what to to use. We had so many different melodies and parts that it was tricky to choose. Every jam we come up with a cooler guitar riff or synth line.If you could go back and change anything, what would it be
Jeff: The verses. I think they could be stronger lyrically.Odd fact about song
Jeff: The first half of the chorus is a tribute to MGMT’s song, “Weekend Wars.” I was working in a cd store when the album came out and I heard it in the first verse and it stuck with me this while time. What was your inspiration for writing the song
Jeff: Basically just fun. I actually have drawn up plans for building a cabin and thats my only real goal in life, is to buy some land and kind of just live in the middle of nowhere. I love the idea of being self sufficient and alone so I figured why not write a song about it. Evan: So many look for a certain feel whether it be ambient, driving or just upbeat. I have always felt there needs to be ambient and driving songs so this was the final outcome of that idea. When was your favorite time performing it live
Jeff: For me, it was at a show back in September. The crowd was really into the show, but when we hit the bridge people went insane and it turned into some type of awesome dance party. Evan: Just to see people enjoy “Drive” and really understand it was an unreal feeling. What is the meaning behind the song: This song, like most if not all of our songs, is open to interpretation. Whatever it means to you is good enough for us.Jeff: But I can tell you what it means to me if you like? This song is for me. Drive by SHEBEARFollow us on Facebook and Twitter!
