Jolene Flebb of Woodway writes: “Your recent walk down Band Name Lane was a wonderful, terrific, and educating experience—you should do it at least once a month! Right now, howev, might we trouble you to name us some bands that have previously used a name—only to abandon it—not once but TWICE?
“My thinking is this: If a band has already used the same name more than once, it’s quite possible they will use it AGAIN . . . so why not be prepared?”
Heh, Jolene. You thought this would a tough one, didja? Well, my knowledge of names is not only comprehensive but encyclopedic. A fine combo playing this week, the Catheters, were on two separate occasions billed as the Hideous Cuke Demon. Twice, six months apart, the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed as Ano-Genital Warts. Queens of the Stone Age were twice the Crewcut Plagiarists. Weezer were twice the Slimes.
The Dixie Chicks recorded two CDs, five years apart, as Pterodactyl Schlong. 504 Boyz were twice Sir James McDonough & His Royal Pussypullers. System of a Down were twice (if only briefly) Booker T. & the LSMFTs.
Garbage were twice known as the Ugly. They were also, just for one show, the Very Ugly.
For THREE extended runs over a nine-year stretch, Tegan and Sara called themselves Mucilage and Asparagus. Insane Clown Posse were twice Democracy Pizza, thrice the Dweebs, and FOUR times (all in ’96) they gigged for a week as Klactoveesedstene.
But the takers of the cake are Jurassic 5, who no less than SIX TIMES played strings of dates as the Codpiece Killjoys of San Berdoo. Way to go!
The Catheters play the Crocodile Cafe at 9 p.m. Sat., Feb. 1 with Division of Laura Lee and Burning Brides. $12/$10 adv.
