Lead singer Isaac Brock’s angry, half-screaming vocals over jangly, dissonant rock sounded unique, and it gave voice to angsty suburban teenagers. There were thousands of teenagers watching Modest Mouse play Bumbershoot’s Mainstage, but it’s hard to know what those kids were excited about. Modest Mouse played mostly newer material during their set, and singles like “Dashboard” and “We’ve Got Everything” lack the urgency and intensity as songs off The Lonesome Crowded West. Maybe it’s Brock that drew those teenagers in. Even with five albums and dozens of songs, Brock never seems bored on stage. He doesn’t half-ass anything, bouncing in time to the music while strumming his guitar, his vocals just as expressive as they’ve ever been. Modest Mouse might no longer be the voice of a generation, but now they’re true showmen, doing everything they can to entertain a crowd.Renee McMahonRenee McMahonRenee McMahonRenee McMahon
