R.I.P.: TalksickThe local hip-hop community is in mourning today after the passing of Talksick, one of its most fervent supporters, from unknown causes. During a phone interview this afternoon, rapper/promoter Candidt described him as a “music philosopher” who participated in the scene not through the creation of music, but rather through the simple yet important act of “show[ing] up at all the shows. That was his escape. He was a true fan and a true connoisseur of what he called real hip-hop. He liked the raw, in-your-face stuff.”
It’s a testament to the closeness of the scene that so many have been making their grief public via blog posts, social-networking sites, and text-blasts. Often, locally-based subcultures, no matter the city, are more incestuous than close-knit, with folks scrambling for advantages to propel their own advancement as opposed to propping each other up for the sake of the whole. By and large, Seattle hip-hop is not like this, and the deeply felt passing of Talksick bears that out. To that end, Candidt announced a special edition of “The Corner” in honor of Talksick on Oct. 23 at The Rendezvous. The all-local showcase will feature Wojack, Yirim Seck, Cheezealeo, Logics, and Mr. Hill. Doors at 10 p.m. and the cost is $5.
