Portland’s Wild Flag made the list.Stereogum published their list of 2011’s 40 Best New Bands today–their 2010 list presciently included Zola Jesus, Best Coast, Twin Sister, Active Child, Cults, Tame Impala, and a smattering of other now-established names, so who are the future stars they named in this year’s list? Brooklyn is obviously disproportionately represented, taking eight spots on the list; Portland bands also made a respectable impression via Wild Flag and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Los Angeles makes a good showing (Frank Ocean, EMA, OFF!, Lana Del Rey), as does the UK (Yuck, Holy Other, Star Slinger, Jamie Woon, SBTRKT) and Canada (Austra, Grimes, The Weeknd, Purity Ring, Suicide Squeeze-signed Dirty Beaches). Locally, though, the question is how many Seattle bands made the list. Last year, Perfume Genius was the lone representative from our city. How did 2011 compare?The answer is: the same. One Seattle group made Stereogum’s list this year: natch, Shabazz Palaces. Says Stereogum:Shabazz Palaces is the heady hip hop project from former Digable Planets member Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, an outfit that focuses on spacey grooves and warped, overtly technical rapping. The beats are knotty, the rhymes complex, and the paths the music takes are largely exploratory. Riding the strength of two solid EPs from 2010 — Of Light and Shabazz Palaces — Sub Pop debut Black Up lives up to the promise of those recordings while cleaning up the sound, but not dismissing all the songs’ signature haze. Also, you don’t have to go much further than the songs’ titles to understand what kind of headspace Butler’s in here — just look at the name of the attached MP3. That’s for real.Good on them, but we personally think it’s a criminal oversight that Craft Spells, who released their superb Idle Labor LP in April, was left off this list.
