Phil Collins was famously accused of ending his marriage via a fax—quite possibly the most 80s thing anyone could ever do. He is and was a pop pariah, the patron saint of Sad Dad Rock. Almost no critics or pop peers liked him in his heyday: Led Zeppelin accused the man of not knowing how to play drums, the Sex Pistols called his work “pomp and idiocy,” and David Bowie derided his own poorly received personal output in the 80s as his “Phil Collins Years.”
But you know what? Phil Collins is great. Without him, Tarzan would’ve been half a movie, and we wouldn’t have gotten the greatest, most cryptic Sad Dad Jam of all time: the immortal “In the Air Tonight.” Who better to cover the song than Fly Moon Royalty—the illustrious Seattle R&B duo featuring Adra Boo, a woman who knows how to evoke the hell out of a goddamn mood. Since “In the Air Tonight” is full of all the moods in the spectrum of human emotion, Adra Boo uses her unique powers to rip this song a new one. Check out the soulful, windblown cover above and be prepared to feel the feels. Also, clever move turning that drum break into an MPC groove.
