Personal Bias: My mixed feelings about the new record (which I quickly got over). The Crowd: Enthusiastic, dorky and drunky.Overheard in the crowd: [in reference to frontman Buzz Osbourne’s fetching frock] “He’s been rocking the mumu for ten years!”Random Notebook Dump: Showbox booking agent Chad Queirolo once booked a Karp show at Bumbershoot. The Melvins played two sets to a wildly appreciative crowd last night at the Showbox; unfortunately, getting hung up in traffic on my way back from Portland meant I only caught the second. However, just getting the opportunity to see them cover Karp’s “Bacon Industry” was so magical that it helped alleviate the pain of missing classics that were in the first set, such as their interpretation of Flipper’s “Sacrifice” (from 1992’s Lysol). They essentially did a perfect mix of new material and old favorites, including “Let It All Be” and a performance of “Revolve” so thunderous, I could feel the floor shaking underneath my feet. I haven’t ever left a Melvins’ show disappointed, and last night was no exception. They seem to be in exceptional form on this tour; if you have a chance to catch any of the remaining dates, here’s what’s left on the itinerary:July 7 Eugene, OR John Henry’sJuly 9 San Jose, CA Blank ClubAugust 28 Minneapolis, MN Grumpy’s
