Ok, so today sucked, and tomorrow doesn’t look much better. After a weekend of 80-degree weather, dipping back to 60 and overcast was a harsh return to the reality of Seattle. But never fear–the forecast says we’ll be back to sun and 70s by Wednesday. And to get prepared for the inevitable return to sunshine, your first step should be downloading the fourth installation of the Backyard BBQ mixtape series from Seattle’s own dj100proof. These once-a-year releases that began in 2007 (the first three volumes are available on his MySpace) are one of my favorite releases to look forward to each summer, and Volume 4 doesn’t disappoint. Some high points on the soulful jazz, funk and old-school hip-hop steeped mix include Large Professor’s “I Juswanna Chill,” Ahmad’s old-school groove “Back in the Day,” The Liquid Crystal Project’s “Tribute to TROY” and an RIP moment with Guru’s “Feel The Music.” The mixing is fantastic, and the vibe is perfect for exactly what it sets out to accomplish.Aside from reminding me how much I love summertime in Seattle, these mixtapes make me miss having a backyard, and a barbecue. At least the latter is one I can do something about.
