Mac DeMarco and company were in the KEXP studio recording a live stream this afternoon before heading to the U-District to play a sold out show at the Neptune tonight. Mac is one of my personal favs. I love his music enthusiastically and unironically. But I tried to channel my innermost chillaxed/whatevercore goddess as we sat curbside to chat after the set and learn more about his Seattle lore. Your demographic is mainly cool teens. How would you describe the difference between your East and West Coast fans?I think the West Coast fans have been way crazier. Especially when we play LA, Southern California. Also, we haven’t come up and played the Northwest in a while. The kids last night in Portland were crazy. Last time we were in Seattle they were crazy too. So yeah, I don’t know. I’m not around this part of the country more so maybe they’re kinda like more jacked up to come have a good time. Which is great.Maybe there’s more bros in the Northwest. You have a lot of bro type fans, too, right? We went to a frat house the other day. So kinda bro-y, yeah. I know Naomi Punk is on Captured Tracks with you, but they were saying that you guys kind of go way back. How do you know them?I met Travis from Naomi Punk when I was like 18 or 19. He was playing in a band called Last Slice of Butter, and my old band, Makeout Videotape ended up playing this warehouse show with them in Vancouver. I’d been listening to Naomi Punk before they got signed to Captured Tracks, and when they signed them I was like, “Oh, great!” Then I went to their show and I was like, “Oh, that was a great set.” He’s like, “I’ve met you before!” I was like, “Oh yeah, what’s up?” And then we ended up taking them on tour for a long time. That was probably my favorite tour we’ve ever done. It was really cool. What’s the story behind the Seattle hat you used to wear all the time? Is it retired now?It got stolen years ago. But that hat was given to me by my friend Jesse Atkey, who’s from Edmonton. He plays in a band called O.J. Pimpson.Oooh! [laughs]Racy name. But he was given the hat by our mutual friend Calvin Kozeraski who lived in Vancouver. But he became like a Jehovah’s Witness and kind of like left the friend group and we never really saw him again. But yeah, that was kind of like my hat to remember Calvin because we never saw him again. And then that hat got stolen and then I actually wore a, what is it, Seattle Mariner’s, is that the team? Yeah. [laughs]I had a Mariner’s hat for a while, too. That got stolen, too. You should try an Everett Aquasox hat, or whatever.Yeah, I kinda just wear what kids give to me. So if someone brings one to the show tonight, then lucky me, you know?
