Last year’s Sound Off! winners Tomten are finally getting around to releasing some new music. In January, the band announced a signing with the local Flat Field Records; on April 10th, Flat Field will release a 10-inch of 4 Tomten songs on vinyl called Ta Ta Dana. The EP is a precursor to a full-length called Wednesday’s Children that’s currently scheduled for a June release. The two tracks on the B-side, “Thwarting the Young” and “It Won’t Escape Me” are pleasant but forgettable. The reverse, however, contains two supremely elegant pop songs that belie the band’s youth–the title track is smooth and stately with a longing organ melody; “So So So” is a blithesome, head-bobbing tune sung like a bird by bassist Lena Simon. What to make of the great divide? Well, the B-side songs didn’t make the cut for the Wednesday’s Children LP, while the far superior A-side tracks will did. In that case, those two songs are a promising indicator of what’s to come. You can listen to “Ta Ta Dana” and “So So So” on Tomten’s Bandcamp page.Tomten will play a release show for Ta Ta Dana at the Tractor Tavern on Thursday, April 12. Eighteen Individual Eyes and Ruler will open. The show starts at 9 p.m. and there’s an $8 cover.
