Katrina HerzogWho: De La SoulWhen: 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5Where: Fisher Green Stage–aka the real main stage if you have good taste in music.Over the past couple of years, De La Soul soul has been at a creative standstill. Not with their recorded music, which actually continues to get better and better, but rather during their live shows which have felt stale and phoned-in. But their set at Bumbershoot this year was the complete opposite of that. They had a vitality and bounce to them that I haven’t seen out of these guys in years. They also had a 10 person band on stage called the Rhythm Roots All-Stars, backing them up and hearing all of their classic songs with three percussionists, three horns, a drummer, bassist, guitar player, and keyboardist made a huge difference. My favorite image was seeing Posdnous, Maceo, and Truygoy jumping all over the place and hitting folks with jams like “Me, Myself,” and I” (which they used to hate performin) “Grind Date,” and even “Ring Ring Ring” from their De La Soul is Dead album. Based on what l’ve read this morning, they put on a way better “main stage” performance than bands that were actually on the main stage. The Old 97 and Sheryl Crow weren’t a huge draw but everybody I saw had their hands in their air and a huge smile on their face during De La’s set.
