Jack of All Trades will be performing Dec. 26 at El Corazon.?A lot went into writing your favorite song, but how much do you really know about it? This week Johnny Coy, vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Seattle alt-rock four-piece Jack of all Trades, delves into bus station inspiration, melting and pulling through the rough patches of life. Song: “My Holocaust”Album:
My Holocaust (Single)Release Date: Oct. 31, 2011When it was Written: December 2010, The beginning of Jack of all Trades as a band. Where it was written: The line in the chorus, “My Holocaust, hiding from what is real and what is true” came to me during a car ride back from dropping my ex-girlfriend off at a bus station. This was the backbone of the song idea. Favorite line in the song: “The novels on this shelf, speak of our Blitzkrieg.” This line falls on the bridge and as Nick (lead guitar) hits the first note of the solo, the word “Blitzkrieg” is yelled at the top of my lungs matching his first note. Which part was the hardest to come up with: That sizzlin’ hot solo! We worked very hard to polish the solo and have a great foundation for Nick to roll on. It’s crucial for us to have that ass kickin’ solo that everyone just melts over. And the first time I heard it, I did in fact, melt. If you could go back and change anything, what would it be: After listening to your own song over and over after recording it, we’ve made so many changes to this song its hard to imagine doing it differently. However, over time maybe some things will come to our attention that we need to work on. Odd fact about this song: If this song were to be a whole novel, i’m sure it would be in the self-help section. Also, this song is often referenced in our jam room by changing the lyrics “When all is lost it’s up to me to make it through” by substituting the band member’s names: “When Greg is lost it’s up to Nick to make it through.” It always gets ’em to crack a smile. What was the inspiration for writing this song: Being the first song that I wrote, I have a very strong connection and emotion attached to it, and I feel that’s where most great songs are written – from the heart. I was just completely down on my luck and I felt like I was just hiding from all of my friends because of a relationship I was in. But at the end of the day you’ll only have yourself and you have to be able to pick yourself up off the ground when you’re at the lowest of lows. When I finally got around to picking myself up, I became stronger than I ever have been. The experiences that you have, for better or for worse, will always be a learning curve. When was your favorite time performing it live: Right after we got out of the recording studio, in El Corazon. It just felt so polished and I was feeling extremely confident in our performance with it. The meaning behind this song: This song is for anyone who is going through a tough time and it seems that you’re only by yourself. Personally, I’ve had to overcome many obstacles growing up from poverty to heartache. “My Holocaust” is an extremely emotionally driven song. Everyone has a rough spot here and there, rich or poor. I feel that sometimes you just need a little encouragement to get you through the rough and back on the fairway. What better way to express this than through it than a theraputic, melodic, and heavy song like “My Holocaust.”
