It might be too early to judge, but Summer 2010 has seen some stunning new releases (Menomema’s Mines,

LCD Soundsystem’s This is Happening, and local band The Head and The Heart’s self-titled EP are just a few examples). But I’ve already heard, read the reviews of, or acquired those three records, so it’s time to put together a new summer buying list. Here’s a list of some new and old releases that I’ve never heard before but that I’m hoping to own this summer. (Any suggestions for others? I’m feeling impressionable.)4. Exile in Guyville, Liz Phair. Given Liz Phair’s recent absurd descent into Bollywood madness, I feel compelled to remind myself what made this amazing female musician so amazing in the first place. I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never owned a copy of this response to Exile on Mainstreet,and I’ve never heard the whole record from start to finish, mostly because it was out of print for years. The good news is that the album was reissued in 2008; the bad news it that I’ve been resting on my laurels about picking up a copy.3. Lungs, Florence and The Machine. I tend to short-sightedly dismiss any band that has generated effusive praise and endless buzz. I also immediately dislike anything associated with chick-flicks. While I’ve yet to hear this whole album, the charm and loveliness of FATM’s singles are irresistible, and I’m giving in.2. The Suburbs, Arcade Fire. I know I’ve got another few weeks until this is released, but I’d like to own it now. I’ve only heard one single from the record, and that’s good enough for me. If the rotation of the Earth could just speed up a bit and reach August 3 a little sooner I’d be pretty happy.1. Admiral Fell Promises, Sun Kil Moon. Although I was underwhelmed by Mark Kozelek’s somewhat monotone set at Sasquatch! 2009, I’ve always been a fan of his beautiful guitars and heartfelt emotions. Plus, it’s gotten some love from both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. (Who am I kidding? Even a two-starred review from the Podunk Times would have convinced me to buy this.)
