Tea Cozies – ready to rock you tomorrow at GMF.

Tomorrow is Artopia, our annual arts extravaganza — the festivities kick off at 2 p.m. out and around Georgetown. There’s going to be fire dancing, there’s going to be a woman who makes sculptures of brain neurons, and Bob Goldthwait is going to screen a really scary-looking movie about clowns.

It’s also going to be the second day of Georgetown Music Fest. Live music will be playing on three outdoor stages from 2-10pm, and there’s a lot of great bands to check out once you’ve seen your fill of painting, sculpture, performance art, and scary clowns — Skeletons With Flesh On Them, Dark Time Sunshine, Victor Shade, and quite a few more of our local favorites will be on hand. You can click here to view the full schedule, and here are just a couple of my personal picks for the festival:

Ladyfriend — 2 p.m. on the Mt. Harney Stage: Ladyfriend claims to be influenced by zombies and UFOs; accordingly, the trio’s light-hearted pop tunes are spacey and replete with Michael Dunford’s quirky, wobbly vocals and Taylor DePonte’s futuristic-sounding synthesizers, bringing to mind a certain Ziggy Stardust. Also, one of our favorite music contributors, Greg Franklin, is the drummer, and he is awesome.

Black Whales — 3 p.m. on the Georgetown Brewing Stage: Black Whales are just the kind of band every city needs in its indie scene repertoire – a group of scruffy, handsome young guys playing reliably sweet and catchy pop-rock tunes. The songs off their Origins EP are jangly but tightly crafted; the guitars reverb and the vocals echo, giving them a classic vintage feel that’s instantly likeable.

Tea Cozies — 5 p.m. on the Mt Harney Stage: Tea Cozies’ Hot Probs was one of the best local releases of 2009 – its airy garage rock garnered well-deserved comparisons to the Breeders and the Pixies, but the music is original in its own right for its ingenious mixture of upbeat pop rhythms, extra-loud banging percussion, and brazen, girl-powered vocals.

GMF is also going on tonight, starting at 6pm — The Pica Beats, Candysound, Suntonio Bandanaz, and SAYS will all be playing.
