This year marks the second time that Bumbershoot has featured electronic music acts and DJs, and like last year’s lineup, the featured artists straddle the line between what’s interesting and what’s gonna keep the kids dancing. With three acts in three and three-quarter hours, each day is like a mini-rave—albeit occurring much earlier in the evening than most groovers are used to. Saturday’s Bumbertrip DJ and Electronica Gathering kicks off at Bumberclub/Flag Pavilion with local boy wonder and Imperial Dub recording artist Lo Phat Hi-Fi, a.k.a. Matt Corwine (7-8pm), who prefers a lot of funk and soul in his unorthodox style of house music. Corwine puts on a live PA that can rock out or mellow out, depending on his mood. Seattle’s superstar DJ Donald Glaude (8:05-9:15) follows. A surefire crowd pleaser, Glaude continues to pack the house after all these years on the dance scene, but his success is only partially due to his pump-up-the-volume breaks and hard house beats. Much of his popularity lies in his onstage persona—he actually has a personality behind the decks and regularly cuts the volume to throw shout-outs to the crowd, whooping and hollering to the records. Trust me, the kids dig it. Closing out Saturday evening is Swayzak (9:20-10:45), a tech house duo from the UK that received massive accolades and adoration from the dance music press for last year’s Snowboarding in Argentina (Mixer even called it “Album of the Year”). Equally influenced by Maurizio and dub, as well as disco house and Detroit techno’s minimalist leanings, Swayzak creates beautiful music that’s just as comfy in the home as on the dance floor.

The only representation of jungle comes on Sunday when Pressure resident DJ Eva takes the floor with MC M.I.A (7-8), who may be the only person in the country who DJs and MCs. The duo makes for a tight combination: Eva cuts up sexy, swaggering rollers with neurofunk tech-step and ragga jungle, providing a steady stream of roughneck breakbeats for M.I.A.’s freaky flow. Following the junglistas is Jacob London (8:05-9:15), actually Bob Hansen and Dave Pezner, Seattle’s hot new house producers. They’ve already put out a couple of kick-ass 12-inches on local label Eatknowledge, and have been known to turn in pumping live PA and DJ sets. Filtered funk is the mark of this duo, the kind of stuff that rides you like a roller-coaster from beginning to end. Headlining is San Francisco’s queen bee, Charlotte the Baroness (9:20-10:45), one of the nation’s best-known female DJs (though she’s often in the shadows of her musical kin, the Hardkiss Brothers). The Baroness specializes in deep, eclectic sets that range from old school hip-hop to Chicago house to funky breaks without missing a beat.
