Bottoms Up

Before drinking heavily, it's helpful to eat a slice of pizza the size of your head.

Ken Kesey had a theory about proper heavy drinking: “Put a bottom under it.” Essentially, this bit of advice is the reverse of “soaking it up,” the brunch-centric/morning-after hangover cure. Put literally, Kesey was saying: “Eat a good meal, then start boozing.” But it’s a tricky balance. If you eat too much, the booze will just sit at the top of your throat. Eat too little, you’ll be the first one puking out the taxicab window. This is where Talarico’s enters the picture. This West Seattle establishment is known for its clownishly large pizza slices. At nearly two feet in length, they are akin to those foam hands sold at baseball games. The first time I visited, I vastly underestimated how filling a single slice could be and ordered two. Halfway through the second slice, I regretted my decision. But every visit since I’ve limited myself to one, thus discovering what might be the best meal to consume to achieve that aforementioned digestive balance. You see, a slice of Talarico’s pizza is not grossly filling, it’s satisfying. On my most recent visit, I guzzled about five pints of pale ale (itself a filling beverage) after finishing my slice. The waiter tempted me with another slice. But I’d learned my lesson: I took it to go and ate it around midnight, right before the room began to spin.
